Light Solos
Text / VideoStarting from research began in the film and new media program Le Fresnoy, Studio National des Arts Contemporains in 2010, which resulted in the short solo Atomic 5.1, Ula continues to explore how light can alter the perception of the body and of movement, becoming an active choreographic agent: In the two solos presented during the Working Title Festival in Brussels, the choreography happens as much in the eye of the spectator as it does in the body of the performer.
.
Working with material commonly used during concerts and in nightclubs, the light sources not only produce the choreographic score but also the musical one: Sound artist and regular collaborator Yann Leguay, who has been developing an approach to sound which blurs the hierarchy between the musical and scenic elements, works with amplification to make the lamps themselves audible. Working in concert with the body, the technique of the theatrical dispositive, becomes itself an instrument, if not an active performer.
Currently involved in a research period towards the creation of a group piece, Ula has been in residency in the Pianofabriek this fall and will be in residency at WorkSpaceBrussels in the new year. The two main areas of her research trajectory fall under the double heading - Performing Light, Performing Movement.
